Harold Gray OBE, the distinguished and devoted conductor who worked with the CBSO for nearly 50 years, was born 100 years ago this week. In this tribute concert CBSO players joined renowned tenor Ian Partridge to perform one of Gray's favourite works, Vaughan Williams's impressionist song-cycle On Wenlock Edge. A landmark in English song, it sets A.E. Housman's poignant words to some of the composer's most impassioned music. CBSO Honorary Archivist Beresford King-Smith introduced the programme, which also included a chance to hear another Vaughan Williams rarity - the lyrical Phantasy Quintet (with Elizabeth Fryer viola).
